The name
A big wave, and a father's word for it.
Tundalaya was my father's made-up name for a big wave. It has been part of our family folklore for over three generations.
As little kids, my Dad would take us swimming in the ocean and tell us that large waves were called Tundalayas. When we were little, we would be in his arms as Tundalayas came in — he would duck under water with me in one arm and my sister in the other.
As we got bigger, he would sit on the edge of the beach and yell "Tundalaya!" at the top of his lungs — and we knew it was time to duck.
"Tundalaya!"
— a signal, shouted from the edge of the beach
